The Railroad Commission of Texas [RRC], the agency overseeing the state's oil and gas production, is investigating a powerful 5.1-magnitude earthquake that struck West Texas last Monday, one of the strongest quakes in Texas history, for any connection to the state's produced water disposal wells related to petroleum extraction. The quake, which originated 28 miles north of Midland and shook cities across the western part of the state, was one of over 50 earthquakes that have hit Martin and surrounding counties in the last week, prompting the agency to examine whether these seismic events are linked to the disposal of wastewater produced during oil and gas operations.

The National Hurricane Center has again increased the development chances for a tropical disturbance in the Caribbean Sea, meaning millions of people from Florida to Louisiana should prepare for the potential impacts of Tropical Storm or Hurricane Helene later this week.
Through Monday, the development chances for Invest 97L will likely continue to increase, and a tropical depression or tropical storm could form in the western Caribbean by Tuesday.
Hurricane Watches could then be issued for portions of the U.S. Gulf Coast, and we could be tracking Tropical Storm Helene by the middle of the week.
On Thursday or Thursday night, the storm, whether it's a tropical storm or Hurricane Helene, could make landfall somewhere between Louisiana and Florida.
