The rig count in the Permian Basin was up three this week, the latest count Friday by Baker Hughes shows, with 357 rigs active in the region. A year ago, 293 rigs were active in the region.
Nationally, the total oil and gas rig count is unchanged from last week at 771 rigs. A year ago, 610 rigs were active.
The oil rig countwas down four to 609, while the natural gas rig count was up four, to 160.
The U.S. rig count peaked at 4,530 in 1981. It bottomed out in August 2020 at 244.

The print surpassed market expectations but still saw the year-on-five-year average surplus grow to 128 Bcf, or plus-4.9%.
Total Lower 48 working gas in underground storage stood at 2,729 Bcf as of Jan. 20, according to EIA.
