The tightening of oil supplies around the world sent crude oil prices upward by more than a dollar a barrel on Friday. The price gains were also boosted by U.S. inflation data that indicated price rises were slowing.
West Texas Intermediate for delivery in May rose $1.30 a barrel to $75.67 on the New York Mercantile Exchange.
Global benchmark Brent crude managed a 50-cent increase to $79.77 a barrel. However, Brent crude for June delivery rose $1.29 or 1.6% and closed at $79.89 a barrel on ICE Futures Europe.
May natural gasrose 12 cents to $2.22 per 1,000 cubic feet.

The personal consumption expenditures price index, the Federal Reserve's preferred inflation gauge, rose 4.6% year-over-year in February, down from a 4.7% annual rate in January. The index, excluding food and energy, rose 0.3% month-over-month, down from 0.5% in January and below analyst expectations of 0.4%. The index measures costs consumers pay across a wide swath of items.
