New Mexico's oil output gains top Texas in 2022, delivering half of US growth
New Mexico's crude oil production grew more last year than any other U.S. state, including top producer Texas, and accounted for half the nation's overall gain, signaling its importance in expanding U.S. oil output.
The state's production rose by a record 300,000 barrels per day (bpd) in 2022, to 1.6 million bpd, the U.S. Energy Information Administration said on Thursday. It was the third consecutive year that New Mexico's increase outpaced other states.
Overall U.S. crude oil production grew by 600,000 bpd in 2022, averaging 11.9 million bpd, the EIA said.

Wastewater disposal in the Permian Basin is becoming increasingly challenging as disposal wells approach their capacity due to pressure buildup, potentially impeding future drilling. The industry's ability to sustain drilling operations in the long term hinges on developing seismic-resilient disposal techniques, alternative uses for wastewater and cost-effective wastewater treatment technologies, experts said at the recent Oilfield Water Markets Conference.

A recent study conducted by the National Ocean Industries Association revealed that US oil production, and specifically oil production in the Gulf of Mexico, have carbon intensities 23% and 46% lower than the international average outside North America, respectively, surpassing major oil-producing nations such as Russia, Brazil, Iran, Iraq and Nigeria. In a statement, NOIA President Erik Milito underscored the Gulf of Mexico's global leadership in oil and gas production and its critical contribution to energy security, national security and energy affordability.

U.S. energy firms this week cut 11 oil rigs, the most in a week since September 2021, energy services firm Baker Hughes Co said in its closely followed report on Friday.
That follows last week's cut of 17 natural gas rigs, which was the biggest drop since June 2020.
The total oil and gas rig count, an early indicator of future output, fell by 11 to 720 in the week to May 19, the lowest since May 2022.
Baker Hughes said that puts the total rig count down eight, or 1%, below this time last year, the first time since April 2021 that rigs were lower than the year-ago level.
