Despite the high risk and cost associated with geothermal energy, major energy companies such as Chevron, BP and Shell are investigating its potential through pilot projects and early-stage exploration, attracted by the technology's 24/7 availability and smaller land footprint when compared to wind and solar. However, scaling the technology is challenged by regulatory and financial barriers, although novel approaches such as enhanced geothermal systems that use hydraulic fracturing may help improve geothermal's competitiveness and rate of return.

Riley Exploration Permian Inc. said on April 4 that it completed its previously announced acquisition of New Mexico oil and natural gas assets from Pecos Oil & Gas LLC, an affiliate of Cibolo Energy Partners LLC.
Riley Exploration paid $330 million for the assets before customary purchase price adjustments, the company said in a press release. The deal, announced in February, added 11,700 contiguous net acres in Eddy County, New Mexico, with then-current production of 4,200 bbl/d (7,200 boe/d). The transaction included more than 100 gross horizontal development drilling locations.

Former president Donald Trump was charged Tuesday with 34 felony counts of falsifying business records for his alleged role in hush-money payments that were made during his 2016 presidential campaign to cover up damaging stories that threatened to emerge.
Trump pleaded not guilty during an extraordinary hearing in Manhattan’s Supreme Court, where he appeared amid a wild melee of media and protesters outside.
“At its core, this case is about someone who lied again and again to protect their interests.” Manhattan District Alvin Bragg said at a press briefing after the hearing.
In all, the charges carry a maximum sentence of up to 136 years in prison but it is unlikely he would face that if he is convicted.
